Abstract
This publication examines the increasingly important role of the conservation scientist. Conservation science, where scientists develop an understanding of why and how museum objects deteriorate, and research into methods and materials for arresting that deterioration, has become a specialism in its own right. The importance of adequate communication between the conservation scientist and conservators is also explored, together with the place of science in the education of conservators.
