Abstract
Cuba is well-known for its complex cash economy. The series discusses here addresses more of an ideological conundrum than a practical challenge – how the state engenders unity and material disinterest from work carried out in the name of the Cuban Revolution. Adopting a form reminiscent of revolutionary scrip money/bonds issued in the 1950s, these are ‘complementary notes’ (notas complementarias), certificates awarded to citizens in recognition of their contribution to state activity through voluntary work and payments to state organisations.
