Abstract
At a metal-detectorist rally in Wem (Shropshire, UK) in autumn 2018, a small hacksilver hoard was recovered and reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). A year later, removal of the crop permitted further detecting, offering an archaeological context and additional objects. It is believed that the majority of the hoard was recovered. This paper offers an overview of the hoard’s contents and an analysis of what this can tell us of its use and composition. Of particular interest is evidence for how the bulk of the hoard, its ingots, show how Roman silver was processed for reuse, and for the use of Roman weights for assembly and use of its components.
