Abstract

Studying basketry is like having a conversation about time. Basketry collections reflect human adaptation and change, allowing us to glean information about technological and material responses to environmental and societal changes, as well as tracing market influence and change in function. This paper draws on Chumash basketry housed in several major museums to discuss community engagement and museums as active participants. This work sits at the intersection of community-based research and museum data (objects and associated documentation).
