Abstract
In this essay, we examine the context and provenance of the Epifania cartoon, tracing its unbroken history from Michelangelo’s studio, on the day after he died, to its entrance into the British Museum’s collection in 1895. We then focus on the conservation work which has been carried out between 2018 - 2024, and which has enabled us to gain a far richer understanding of the cartoon’s composition and object history.
