Abstract
The British Museum’s collection of gold coins struck by Hispanic colonies in South America provides the sample material for analysis of fineness and alloying practices in the period 1700–1824. The findings show how fineness was adjusted in response to changes in official regulations, and how mints adopted different alloying methods to achieve the required fineness.
