Abstract
In 1947, Mexico was the first Latin American country to recognise India's independence from British rule, with diplomatic relations commencing in 1950. The following year, a Mexican embassy was established in New Delhi and, to nurture cultural exchange between the two countries, the embassy announced a scholarship for Indian artists to travel to Mexico. This was awarded to a young Satish Gujral (1925-2020), who arrived in 1952 and stayed until 1954.
