Abstract
In 1922 a cylinder seal was lent to the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, by a British army officer who had acquired it in Baghdad. This article explores the modern history of the seal in the context of the museum's approach to collecting in a colonial setting and the subsequent interpretation of its carved imagery in relation to so-called Lamashtu plaques of the first millennium BCE.
