Stamped all over the king’s head: defaced coins and women’s suffrage

Abstract

• Using the British Museum's 'Votes for Women' penny as its starting point, this article conducts an analysis of a group of similar coins. It attempts to answer how they were made, how many were made, their purpose and place in suffragette historiography.
